Breathing Yoga Into The Suburbs
Often we know what to do, what is right for us, but we push that aside or ignore it. We know that if we eat the extra chocolate we will get fat, we know that relationship is bad for us, we know we are in the wrong job, we know what we love to do, we know so much. So when we stay in the job or relationship, eat the extra food, don’t do what is good for us then we set up this feeling of internal struggle. This internal battle, the yogis say, is 95% fighting ourselves and 5% virtuous. Our job is to decrease the 95% of fighting so we have less pushing and pulling with what is right and wrong.
The Gita is very clear about knowing the right thing to do with these words. Better to do your own dharma imperfectly than to do someone elses’ perfectly. What this means is live your own life, do what you love and do what you need to do. Don’t worry about what others are doing but do what feels right and what you love. But more importantly do it now. Don’t just talk about what you love and what is right. Make a list of the advantages of what it is. Meditate on this list for a few days, think about the benefits. This will give you will power and resolve and when you have this you will develop self-discipline. Self discipline will take you where ever you need to go.
Practice for today: Deep down you know what is the right thing to do. Go towards what is love. Move in this direction. Don’t worry about the money or time involved. That will sort itself. Develop your own method for achieving this and start right now. Move in your own sweet and perfect way.
